Aeschynomene elaphroxylon también conocido como un ambatch, un árbol de la médula o un árbol de madera de Balsa es un arbusto grande común al árbol pequeño del género Aeschynomene en la familia de Fabaceae. Puede crecer hasta 9 m de altura, con tallos espinosos y pares de espinas sustanciales bajo la base de las hojas. A. elaphroxylon es indígena de partes de África tropical. Por lo general, crece por el agua y el agua en los suelos, como por los ríos, lagos y pantanos en países como Ghana y Nigeria, pero está extendida a través de África tropical a Etiopía y Sudán, y más al sur y este en Zimbabwe. Se sabe que las semillas de A. elaphroxylon permanecen viables después de haber sido enterradas durante unos años en los bancos inundados donde crece bien. Las semillas están contenidas en vainas que crecen en espirales aplanadas y erguidas en el árbol. El árbol tiene nódulos de fijación de nitrógeno en su tallo. En Etiopía la especie se puede encontrar en el Parque Nacional de Nechisar.
