Prueba de Ames
La prueba de Ames es un método ampliamente empleado que utiliza bacterias para probar si un determinado producto químico puede causar cáncer. Más formalmente, es un ensayo biológico para evaluar el potencial mutagénico de los compuestos químicos. Una prueba positiva indica que el producto químico es mutagénico y, por lo tanto, puede actuar como carcinógeno, porque el cáncer suele estar relacionado con una mutación. La prueba sirve como un ensayo rápido y conveniente para estimar el potencial carcinogénico de un compuesto debido a que los ensayos estándar de carcinógeno en ratones y ratas consumen tiempo y son caros. Sin embargo, se conocen falsos positivos y falsos negativos. El procedimiento fue descrito en una serie de artículos a principios de los años 70 por Bruce Ames y su grupo en la Universidad de California en Berkeley.
