Apóstrofe
El apóstrofe, es un signo de puntuación, ya veces una marca diacrítica, en los idiomas que utilizan el alfabeto latino o ciertos otros alfabetos. En inglés, sirve tres propósitos: ▪ El marcado de la omisión de una o más letras. ▪ El marcado del caso posesivo. ▪ El marcado por algunos como plural de artículos escritos que no son palabras establecidas en la ortografía inglesa. Según el Oxford English Dictionary, 'apostrophe' viene en última instancia del griego ἡ ἀπόστροφος, a través de latín y francés. El apóstrofo parece el mismo como una comilla de cierre, aunque tienen diferentes significados. El apóstrofe también se parece a, pero no es lo mismo que el símbolo primo, que se utiliza para indicar la medición en pies o arcminutes, así como para diversos fines matemáticos, y el'okina, que representa una parada glotal en lenguas polinesias. Tales sustitutos incorrectos como "y" son comunes en los textos no profesionales, donde un tratamiento ambiguo del apóstrofo en la tipografía digital es un factor importante de esta confusión.
