Asclepias
Asclepias L., el milkweed, es un género de plantas herbáceas perennes, dicotiledóneas que contiene más de 140 especies conocidas. Anteriormente pertenecía a la familia Asclepiadaceae, pero ahora se clasifica como la subfamilia Asclepiadoideae de la familia Apocynaceae. Milkweed se nombra por su jugo lechoso que consiste en un látex que contiene los alcaloides y varios otros compuestos complejos incluyendo cardenolides. Se sabe que algunas especies son tóxicas. Carl Linnaeus nombró el género después de Asclepius, el dios griego de la curación, debido a los muchos usos folk-medicinal para las plantas milkweed. La polinización en este género se realiza de una manera inusual. El polen se agrupa en estructuras complejas llamadas pollinia, en lugar de ser granos individuales o tetrads, como es típico para la mayoría de las plantas. Los pies o las piezas bucales de los insectos que visitan flores como abejas, avispas y mariposas, se deslizan en una de las cinco rendijas de cada flor formada por anteras adyacentes. Las bases de la polinia se fijan entonces mecánicamente al insecto, sacando un par de bolsas de polen libres cuando el polinizador se aleja.
