En el contexto de la bioquímica, la avidez se refiere a la fuerza acumulada de múltiples afinidades de interacciones de unión no covalentes individuales, tales como entre un receptor de proteína y su ligando, y se denomina comúnmente afinidad funcional. Como tal, la avidez es distinta de la afinidad, que describe la fuerza de una sola interacción. Sin embargo, debido a que los eventos de unión individuales aumentan la probabilidad de que se produzcan otras interacciones, la avidez no debe considerarse como la mera suma de sus afinidades constitutivas sino como el efecto combinado de todas las afinidades que participan en la interacción biomolecular. Las biomoléculas a menudo forman complejos heterogéneos o oligómeros homogéneos y multímeros o polímeros. Si las proteínas agrupadas forman una matriz organizada, como la capa de clatrina, la interacción se describe como matricidad.
