Haya es un género de árboles caducifolios en la familia Fagaceae, nativa de Europa templada, Asia y América del Norte. Los sistemas de clasificación recientes del género reconocen diez a trece especies en dos subgéneros distintos, Engleriana y Fagus. El subgénero Engleriana se encuentra sólo en Asia oriental, y es notablemente distinto del subgénero Fagus en que estas hayas son árboles de baja ramificación, a menudo compuesto de varios troncos principales con corteza amarillenta. Otras características diferenciadoras incluyen la floración blanquecina en la parte inferior de las hojas, las venas visibles de la hoja terciaria y un pedúnculo de cupule largo y liso.
