Pecho

La mama es la región ventral superior del torso de un primate, en los lados izquierdo y derecho, que contiene la glándula mamaria que en una hembra puede secretar leche utilizada para alimentar a los bebés. Tanto hombres como mujeres desarrollan senos de los mismos tejidos embriológicos. Sin embargo, en la pubertad, las hormonas sexuales femeninas, principalmente el estrógeno, promueven el desarrollo de los senos que no ocurre en los hombres debido a la mayor cantidad de testosterona. Como resultado, los pechos de las mujeres son mucho más prominentes que los de los hombres. Durante el embarazo, el seno es sensible a una compleja interacción de hormonas que causan el desarrollo de tejidos y la ampliación con el fin de producir leche. Tres de estas hormonas son el estrógeno, la progesterona y la prolactina, que causan el tejido glandular en el seno y el útero para cambiar durante el ciclo menstrual. Cada seno contiene 15-20 lóbulos. El tejido adiposo subcutáneo que cubre los lóbulos da al pecho su tamaño y forma. Cada lóbulo se compone de muchos lóbulos, al final de los cuales son sacos donde la leche se produce en respuesta a las señales hormonales.
