El sapo de caña, también conocido como el sapo gigante neotropical o sapo marino, es un gran sapo terrestre verdadero que es nativo de América Central y del Sur, pero se ha introducido en varias islas en toda Oceanía y el Caribe, así como el norte de Australia. Es un miembro del género Rhinella pero era antes en el género Bufo, que incluye muchas diversas especies verdaderas del sapo encontradas a través de Central y Suramérica. El sapo de caña es un criador prolífico; Las hembras ponen desoves de un solo manojo con miles de huevos. Su éxito reproductivo se debe en parte a la alimentación oportunista: tiene una dieta, inusual entre los anuros, tanto de materia muerta como viva. Los adultos miden 10-15 cm de longitud; El espécimen más grande registrado pesaba 2,65 kg con una longitud de 38 cm desde el hocico hasta el respiradero. El sapo de caña es una especie antigua. Un sapo fósil de la fauna de La Venta del último Mioceno de Colombia es indistinguible de los sapos de caña modernos del norte de América del Sur. Se descubrió en un depósito de llanura inundable, lo que sugiere que las preferencias del hábitat de R. marina siempre han sido para áreas abiertas.
