Catálisis
La catálisis es el aumento en la velocidad de una reacción química de uno o más reactivos debido a la participación de una sustancia adicional llamada catalizador. A diferencia de otros reactivos en la reacción química, un catalizador no es consumido por la reacción. Con un catalizador, se requiere menos energía libre para alcanzar el estado de transición, pero la energía libre total de los reactivos a los productos no cambia. Un catalizador puede participar en múltiples transformaciones químicas. El efecto de un catalizador puede variar debido a la presencia de otras sustancias conocidas como inhibidores o venenos o promotores. Lo contrario de un catalizador, una sustancia que reduce la velocidad de una reacción, es un inhibidor. Las reacciones catalizadas tienen una energía de activación inferior a la correspondiente reacción no catalizada, dando como resultado una velocidad de reacción más alta a la misma temperatura.
