Catastrofismo
El catastrophism es la teoría que la tierra ha sido afectada en el pasado por los acontecimientos repentinos, de corta duración, violentos, posiblemente en todo el mundo en alcance. Esto contrastaba con el uniformismo, en el que los lentos cambios incrementales, como la erosión, creaban todas las características geológicas de la Tierra. El Uniformitarismo sostuvo que el presente es la clave del pasado, y que todas las cosas continuaron como eran desde el pasado indefinido. Desde las primeras disputas, se ha desarrollado una visión más inclusiva e integrada de los eventos geológicos, en la cual el consenso científico acepta que hubo algunos eventos catastróficos en el pasado geológico, pero estos fueron explicables como ejemplos extremos de procesos naturales que pueden ocurrir. El catastrofismo sostenía que las épocas geológicas habían terminado con catástrofes naturales repentinas y violentas tales como grandes inundaciones y la rápida formación de cadenas montañosas importantes. Las plantas y los animales que vivían en las partes del mundo donde ocurrieron tales sucesos fueron asesinados, reemplazados abruptamente por las nuevas formas cuyos fósiles definían los estratos geológicos. Algunos catastróficos intentaron relacionar al menos un cambio con el relato bíblico del diluvio de Noé.
