En la geografía humana, una zona de captación es la zona y la población desde la cual una ciudad o servicio individual atrae a visitantes o clientes. Por ejemplo, una zona de captación de la escuela es el área geográfica desde la cual los estudiantes son elegibles para asistir a una escuela local. Otra aplicación del concepto es que los aeropuertos se pueden construir y mantener en lugares donde serían mejor utilizados por la población circundante con una distancia mínima de conducción. Los gobiernos locales y las organizaciones de servicios comunitarios a menudo definen las áreas de captación o áreas de servicio para la seguridad pública y los servicios médicos de emergencia. Las áreas de captación se fundan generalmente en los límites formales del gobierno local o bien en alguna otra base geográfica. Por ejemplo, un barrio o distrito de una ciudad a menudo tiene varias pequeñas tiendas de conveniencia, cada una con una zona de captación de varias calles. Los supermercados, por otro lado, tienen una densidad mucho menor, con áreas de captación de varios barrios.
