Centauro
Un centauro o hippocentaur es una criatura mitológica con la cabeza, los brazos y el torso de un ser humano y el cuerpo y las piernas de un caballo. En las primeras pinturas de los vasos del ático y del beotian, se representan con los cuartos traseros de un caballo atado a ellos; En representaciones posteriores se les da al centauros el torso de un humano unido en la cintura a la cruz del caballo, donde estaría el cuello del caballo. Esta composición mitad humana y mitad caballo ha llevado a muchos escritores a tratarlos como seres liminares, atrapados entre las dos naturalezas, encarnados en mitos contrastados, tanto como la encarnación de la naturaleza indómita, como en su batalla con los Lapiths, o al revés como Maestros, como Quirón. Se decía que los centauros habían nacido de Ixion y Nephele. Otra versión, sin embargo, los convierte en hijos de cierto Centaurus, que se aparea con las yeguas Magnesias. Este Centaurus era él mismo hijo de Ixion y Nephele o de Apolo y Stilbe, hija del dios del río Peneus.
