Charivari
Charivari es el término para una costumbre folklórica francesa en la que la comunidad dio una serenata burlona, discordante simulacro, también golpeando en ollas y sartenes, en el hogar de recién casados. El ruido, el ritual público evolucionó a una forma de coerción social, por ejemplo, para obligar a una pareja aún no casada a casarse. Este tipo de costumbre social surgió de forma independiente en muchas sociedades de aldeas rurales, por ejemplo también en Inglaterra, Italia, Gales o Alemania, donde formaba parte de la red de prácticas sociales por medio de la cual las pequeñas comunidades hacían cumplir sus normas. La comunidad usaba el ruido y los desfiles para demostrar desaprobación, la mayoría de los matrimonios y matrimonios "no naturales", como la unión entre un viudo mayor y una mujer mucho más joven, o el re-matrimonio demasiado temprano por una viuda o un viudo. Las aldeas también usaban charivari en casos de relaciones adúlteras, esposas y madres solteras. En algunos casos, la comunidad desaprobó el nuevo matrimonio de viudos o viudos mayores. Charivari es la palabra original en francés, y en Canadá es usado tanto por hablantes de inglés como de francés. Chivaree se convirtió en la ortografía común en Ontario, Canadá.
