Cloud computing es un término utilizado para referirse a un modelo de computación en red en el que un programa o aplicación se ejecuta en un servidor o servidores conectados en lugar de en un dispositivo informático local como PC, tableta o smartphone. Al igual que el modelo cliente-servidor tradicional o la computación mainframe más antigua, un usuario se conecta con un servidor para realizar una tarea. La diferencia con el cloud computing es que el proceso de computación puede ejecutarse en uno o varios ordenadores conectados al mismo tiempo, utilizando el concepto de virtualización. Con la virtualización, uno o más servidores físicos pueden configurarse y particionarse en múltiples servidores "virtuales" independientes, todos funcionando independientemente y apareciendo al usuario como un único dispositivo físico. Dichos servidores virtuales están en esencia disociados de su servidor físico, y con esta flexibilidad añadida, se pueden mover y escalar hacia arriba o hacia abajo sobre la marcha sin afectar al usuario final. Los recursos informáticos se han vuelto "granulares", lo que proporciona beneficios al usuario final y al operador, incluyendo autoservicio a pedido, amplio acceso a través de múltiples dispositivos, agrupación de recursos, elasticidad rápida y capacidad de medición del servicio.
