La polilla de la manzana es miembro de la familia de los Lepidópteros Tortricidae. Se les conoce como una plaga agrícola, siendo su larva el gusano o gusano común de la manzana. Es nativo de Europa y se introdujo en América del Norte, donde se ha convertido en una de las plagas regulares de manzanos. Se encuentra casi en todo el mundo. También ataca a peras, nueces y otras frutas del árbol. Esta larva es el infame "gusano en la manzana" de la historieta y la fama vernácula; No está relacionado con la lombriz de tierra. La polilla de la manzana es grisácea con rayas de color gris claro y cobre en sus alas, y tiene una envergadura promedio de 17 mm. Las hembras ponen huevos en la fruta o las hojas y las larvas amarillas de cabeza negra atacan la fruta inmediatamente después de la eclosión. Cada larva penetra en la fruta, come por alrededor de tres semanas, luego deja la fruta para pasar el invierno y pupar en otro lugar. La mayoría de la nutrición se obtiene al alimentarse de las semillas proteínicas. La polilla de la manzana es bivoltina en la mayoría de las regiones de los EEUU - en el noroeste pacífico hay una tercera generación parcial.
