La Alianza Cooperativa Internacional fue la primera asociación internacional formada por el movimiento. Incluye el Consejo Mundial de Cooperativas de Ahorro y Crédito. Una segunda organización se formó más tarde en Alemania, la Unión Internacional Raiffeisen. En los Estados Unidos, la National Cooperative Business Association es la asociación nacional más antigua del sector.
