Un condado palatino o palatinado era un área gobernada por un noble hereditario que poseía autoridad especial y autonomía del resto de un reino o imperio. El nombre deriva del adjetivo latino palatinus, "relativo al palacio", del sustantivo palatium, "palacio". Por lo tanto, implica el ejercicio de una prerrogativa cuasi-real dentro de un condado, es decir, una jurisdicción gobernada por un conde, el equivalente inglés de un recuento. Un ducado palatinado es similar, pero es gobernado por un duque, un noble de mayor precedencia que un conde o un conde. El noble juró lealtad al rey pero tenía el poder de gobernar el condado en gran medida independientemente del rey.
