La difusión es el movimiento neto de una sustancia de una región de alta concentración a una región de baja concentración. Esto también se conoce como el movimiento de una sustancia por un gradiente de concentración. Un gradiente es el cambio en el valor de una cantidad con el cambio en otra variable. Por ejemplo, un cambio en la concentración a lo largo de una distancia se denomina gradiente de concentración, un cambio en la presión a lo largo de una distancia se denomina gradiente de presión y un cambio de temperatura en una distancia es un gradiente de temperatura. La palabra difusión se deriva de la palabra latina, "diffundere", que significa "extenderse". Una característica distintiva de la difusión es que da como resultado mezclado o transporte masivo, sin requerir movimiento en masa. Por lo tanto, la difusión no debe confundirse con la convección, o advección, que son otros fenómenos de transporte que utilizan el movimiento masivo para mover las partículas de un lugar a otro.
