La digitoxina es un glucósido cardíaco. Tiene estructura y efectos similares a la digoxina. A diferencia de la digoxina, se elimina a través del hígado, por lo que podría utilizarse en pacientes con función renal pobre o errática. Sin embargo, ahora se utiliza raramente en la práctica médica occidental actual. Aunque varios ensayos controlados han demostrado que la digoxina es eficaz en una proporción de pacientes tratados por insuficiencia cardíaca, la base de evidencia para la digitoxina no es tan fuerte, aunque se presume que es similarmente eficaz.
