Un downburst es un sistema fuerte del viento del suelo que emana de una sola fuente, soplando en una línea recta en todas las direcciones de esa fuente. En un tornado, los vientos de alta velocidad circundan un punto central, moviéndose hacia adentro y hacia arriba, mientras que en un downburst, los vientos son dirigidos hacia abajo y luego hacia fuera desde la superficie Punto de aterrizaje Los arranques subterráneos son creados por un área de aire significativamente refrigerado por la lluvia que, después de alcanzar el nivel del suelo, se extiende en todas direcciones produciendo fuertes vientos. Las ráfagas de calor generan temperaturas significativamente más altas debido a la falta de aire enfriado por la lluvia en su formación.
