Renato Dulbecco era un virólogo, nacido en Italia y naturalizado estadounidense, quien ganó el Premio Nobel de Fisiología o Medicina en 1975 por su trabajo en los oncovirus, que son virus que pueden causar cáncer cuando infectan células animales. Estudió en la Universidad de Turín bajo Giuseppe Levi, junto con sus compañeros Salvador Luria y Rita Levi-Montalcini, quien también se trasladó a los Estados Unidos con él y ganó premios Nobel. Fue reclutado en el ejército italiano en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero más tarde se unió a la resistencia.
