La Expurgación es una forma de censura que implica purgar cualquier cosa considerada nociva u ofensiva, generalmente de una obra artística. Bowdlerization es un término peyorativo para la práctica, particularmente la expurgación de material obsceno de los libros. El término se deriva de la edición de 1818 de Thomas Bowdler de las obras de William Shakespeare, que él volvió a trabajar para hacerlas más convenientes, en su opinión, para las mujeres y los niños.
