La tortuga lisa del tortuga es una tortuga de mar endémica a la plataforma continental de Australia. La tortuga flatback pertenece a la superfamilia Cheloniidae de la tortuga marina y es la única especie encontrada en el género Natator. Su nombre común proviene de su caparazón aplanado en comparación con otras especies de tortugas marinas. Las tortugas flatback adultas tienen un caparazón de cúpula baja, con bordes hacia arriba, que tiene aproximadamente 90-95 cm de largo. El caparazón es de color verde olivo a gris y el plastrón es de color crema. Las crías de Flatback tienen carapaces grises con los scutes claramente marcados en negro. El plastrón y los bordes del caparazón son blancos.
