Gadolinio
El gadolinio es un elemento químico con el símbolo Gd y el número atómico 64. Es un metal de tierras raras blanco-plateado, maleable y dúctil. Se encuentra en la naturaleza sólo en forma combinada. El gadolinio fue detectado por primera vez espectroscópicamente en 1880 por Marignac que separó su óxido y se le atribuye su descubrimiento. Es nombrado para la gadolinita, uno de los minerales en los cuales fue encontrado, a su vez nombrado para el químico Johan Gadolin. El metal de gadolinio posee propiedades metalúrgicas inusuales, en la medida en que tan poco como 1% de gadolinio puede mejorar significativamente la trabajabilidad y resistencia a la oxidación a alta temperatura de hierro, cromo y aleaciones relacionadas. El gadolinio como metal o sal tiene una absorción excepcionalmente alta de neutrones y por lo tanto se utiliza para blindar en la radiografía de neutrones y en reactores nucleares. Como la mayoría de las tierras raras, el gadolinio forma iones trivalentes que tienen propiedades fluorescentes. Por lo tanto, se han usado sales de gadolinio como fósforo verde en diversas aplicaciones. El ion gadolinio que se encuentra en las sales solubles en agua es bastante tóxico para los mamíferos.
