Gao / ɡaʊ / es una ciudad en Malí y la capital de la región de Gao. La ciudad está situada en el río Niger, 320 kilómetros de este-sureste de Tombuctú en la orilla izquierda en la ensambladura con el valle de Tilemsi. Durante gran parte de su historia, Gao fue un importante centro comercial involucrado en el comercio transahariano. En el siglo IX los escritores árabes externos describieron a Gao como una importante potencia regional ya finales del siglo X se decía que el gobernante local era musulmán. Hacia finales del siglo XIII Gao se convirtió en parte del Imperio de Malí, pero en la primera mitad del siglo XV la ciudad recuperó su independencia y con las conquistas de Sonni Ali se convirtió en la capital del Imperio de Songhai. El Imperio se derrumbó después de la invasión marroquí en 1591 y los invasores decidieron hacer de Tombuctú su capital. En el momento de la visita de Heinrich Barth en 1854, Gao había declinado convertirse en una aldea empobrecida con 300 chozas construidas de estera. En 2009, la comuna urbana tenía una población de 86.633. El 31 de marzo de 2012, Gao fue capturado de las fuerzas gubernamentales de Malí por el Movimiento Nacional para la Liberación de Azawad y los rebeldes Ansar Dine.
