En química, el término geminal se refiere a la relación entre dos átomos o grupos funcionales que están unidos al mismo átomo. La palabra viene de latín gemini que significa "gemelos". Un diol geminal, por ejemplo, es un diol unido al mismo átomo de carbono, como en el metanodiol. La gema prefijo también se puede aplicar a un nombre químico para denotar esta relación, como en un gem-dibromuro para "dibromuro geminal". El concepto es importante en muchas ramas de la química, incluyendo la síntesis y la espectroscopía, porque los grupos funcionales unidos al mismo átomo se comportan a menudo diferentemente de cuando se separan.
