En matemáticas, el gradiente es una generalización del concepto usual de derivado a las funciones de varias variables. Si f es una función diferencial, escalar-valorada de varias variables, su gradiente es el vector cuyos componentes son las n derivadas parciales de f. Por lo tanto, es una función de valor vectorial. De manera similar a la derivada usual, el gradiente representa la pendiente de la tangente de la gráfica de la función. Más precisamente, el gradiente apunta en la dirección de la mayor tasa de incremento de la función y su magnitud es la pendiente de la gráfica en esa dirección. Los componentes del gradiente en coordenadas son los coeficientes de las variables en la ecuación del espacio tangente al gráfico. Esta propiedad caracterizadora del gradiente permite que se defina independientemente de la elección del sistema de coordenadas, como un campo vectorial cuyas componentes en un sistema de coordenadas se transformarán al pasar de un sistema de coordenadas a otro. El jacobiano es la generalización del gradiente para funciones de valor vectorial de varias variables y mapas diferenciables entre espacios euclidianos o, más generalmente, colectores.
