El pensar en grupo es un fenómeno psicológico que ocurre dentro de un grupo de personas, en el que el deseo de armonía o conformidad en el grupo da lugar a un resultado de toma de decisiones irracional o disfuncional. Los miembros del grupo tratan de minimizar el conflicto y llegar a una decisión de consenso sin una evaluación crítica de puntos de vista alternativos, suprimiendo activamente puntos de vista disidentes y aislándose de las influencias externas. La lealtad al grupo requiere que las personas eviten plantear temas polémicos o soluciones alternativas, y se pierde la creatividad individual, la singularidad y el pensamiento independiente. La dinámica de grupo disfuncional del "ingrupo" produce una "ilusión de invulnerabilidad". Por lo tanto, el "grupo" sobrevalora significativamente sus propias capacidades en la toma de decisiones, y subestima significativamente las habilidades de sus oponentes. Además, el pensamiento grupal puede producir acciones deshumanizantes contra el "grupo externo". Factores antecedentes como la cohesión del grupo, la estructura de grupo defectuosa y el contexto situacional juegan en la probabilidad de que el pensamiento de grupo influya o no en el proceso de toma de decisiones.
