Calor relámpago
El rayo de calor es el nombre usado para los débiles destellos de rayos en el horizonte u otras nubes de tormentas lejanas que no tienen sonidos acompañantes de truenos. Esto ocurre porque el relámpago se produce muy lejos y el sonido se disipa antes de que llegue al observador. El término es un poco engañoso porque no tiene nada que ver con el calor del rayo en sí. Por la noche, es posible ver los relámpagos de distancias muy lejanas, hasta 100 millas, pero el sonido no lleva tan lejos. El rayo resulta de la descarga de iones negativos creados por la fricción de hielo y partículas de agua chocando entre sí en el fondo de una nube. El rayo de calor puede ser una señal de advertencia temprana de que las tormentas se acercan. En la Florida, el relámpago del calor se ve a menudo sobre el agua por la noche, los restos de las tormentas que se formaron durante el día a lo largo de un frente de la brisa del mar que viene de la costa opuesta. El rayo de calor no debe confundirse con la luminosidad inducida eléctricamente que se genera realmente a altitudes mesosféricas por encima de los sistemas de tormentas eléctricas, un fenómeno conocido como "sprites".
