Se piensa que la esquizofrenia desorganizada es una expresión extrema del síndrome de desorganización que se ha hipotetizado como un aspecto de un modelo de síntomas de tres factores en la esquizofrenia, siendo los otros factores la distorsión de la realidad y la pobreza psicomotora.
