Anquilostoma
Anquilostoma es un nematodo parásito que vive en el intestino delgado de su huésped, que puede ser un mamífero, como un perro, gato o humano. Dos especies de anquilostomas comúnmente infectan a humanos, Ancylostoma duodenale y Necator americanus. A. duodenale predomina en Oriente Medio, Norte de África, India y en el sur de Europa, mientras que N. americanus predomina en las Américas, el África subsahariana, el sudeste asiático, China e Indonesia. Las especies A. braziliense y A. tubaeforme infectan a los gatos, mientras que A. caninum infecta a los caninos. Uncinaria stenocephala infecta tanto a perros como a gatos. A. caninum ha infectado a humanos, con 150 casos reportados en Brisbane, Australia desde 1988-1992. Los anquilostomas son mucho más pequeños que el gusano redondo gigante y las complicaciones de la migración de tejido y la obstrucción mecánica tan frecuentemente observada con la infestación de lombrices son menos frecuentes en la infestación por anquilostomas. El riesgo más significativo de la infección por anquilostomas es la anemia, secundaria a la pérdida de hierro en el intestino. Los gusanos chupan sangre vorazmente y dañan la mucosa. Sin embargo, la pérdida de sangre en las heces no es visible.
