El houting ocurrió una vez en Bélgica, Francia, Alemania, Países Bajos e Inglaterra. Se decía que la cabeza de Houting 'Houtings' sobrevivía en Dinamarca. Sin embargo, nuevas investigaciones mostraron que los "Houtings" de la cuenca Danesa del Mar del Norte y los ríos alemanes son Coregonus maraena. El Rin contiene Coregonus maraena que se han introducido y una especie aún no descrita llamada Coregonus sp. 'Rin'. El último verdadero Houting fue atrapado en el Bajo Rin en 1940.
