Un estante de hielo es una gruesa plataforma flotante de hielo que se forma donde un glaciar o una capa de hielo fluye hacia abajo hasta una costa y sobre la superficie del océano. Los estantes de hielo sólo se encuentran en la Antártida, Groenlandia y Canadá. El límite entre la plataforma de hielo flotante y el hielo que la alimenta es llamado la línea de tierra. El espesor de los estantes de hielo oscila entre 100 y 1000 metros. Por el contrario, el hielo marino se forma sobre el agua, es mucho más delgado, y se forma en todo el Océano Ártico. También se encuentra en el Océano Austral alrededor del continente de la Antártida. Las plataformas de hielo son principalmente impulsadas por la presión de la gravedad del hielo. Ese flujo mueve continuamente el hielo desde la línea de tierra hasta el frente de la estantería. Se pensó que el principal mecanismo de pérdida de masa de las plataformas de hielo fue el apareamiento de iceberg, en el que un trozo de hielo se rompe desde el frente del estante hacia el mar. Un estudio realizado por la NASA y los investigadores universitarios -publicado en el número del 14 de junio de 2013 de Science- encontró sin embargo que las aguas oceánicas que derritieran los lados inferiores de los estantes de hielo antártico son responsables de la mayor parte de la pérdida de masa en el hielo continental.
