Inherencia
Inherencia se refiere a la idea de Empédocles de que las cualidades de la materia provienen de las proporciones relativas de cada uno de los cuatro elementos que entran en una cosa. La idea fue desarrollada por Platón y Aristóteles. Que Plato aceptó la afirmación de Empédocles se puede ver en el Timeo. Sin embargo, Platón también lo aplicó para cubrir la presencia de la forma en la materia. La forma es un principio activo. La materia, por otra parte, es pasiva, siendo una mera posibilidad que las formas dan vida. Aristóteles claramente aceptó la afirmación de Empédocles, pero rechazó la idea de Platón de las formas. Según Aristóteles, los accidentes de una sustancia son seres incorpóreos que están presentes en ella. "Estando" presente en un sujeto "no me refiero a presente ya que las partes están presentes en un todo, pero siendo incapaces de existir aparte de dicho sujeto".
