Instress es un concepto sobre individualidad y singularidad derivado por Gerard Manley Hopkins de las ideas del filósofo medieval Duns Scotus. Sentía que todo en el universo se caracterizaba por lo que él llamó inscape, el diseño distintivo que constituye la identidad individual. Esta identidad no es estática sino dinámica. En última instancia, la instancia de inscape lleva a uno a Cristo, porque la identidad individual de cualquier objeto es el sello de la creación divina en él. Esto se relaciona con una teología logocéntrica y el Imago Dei. Una teología logocéntrica de la creación se basa en la correlación del relato de Génesis y Juan 1.
