Engranaje de involuto
El perfil de engranaje involuto, originalmente diseñado por Leonhard Euler, es el sistema más utilizado para el engranaje de hoy, con el engranaje cicloidal aún se utiliza para algunas especialidades como los relojes. En un engranaje de involución, los perfiles de los dientes son involutos de un círculo. Independientemente de si un engranaje es espiral o helicoidal, en cada plano de los engranajes de involución el contacto entre un par de dientes de engranaje se produce en un solo punto instantáneo donde dos involutas de la misma mano en espiral se encuentran. Contacto en el otro lado de los dientes es donde ambos involutes son de la otra mano espiral. La rotación de los engranajes hace que la ubicación de este punto de contacto se mueva a través de las superficies de diente respectivas. La tangente en cualquier punto de la curva es perpendicular a la generadora independientemente de la distancia de montaje de los engranajes. Así, la línea de la fuerza sigue a la línea generadora y, por lo tanto, es tangente a los dos círculos de base, y es conocida como la Línea de Acción. Cuando esto es cierto, los engranajes obedecen a la Ley Fundamental del Engranaje: La relación de velocidad angular entre dos engranajes de un engranaje debe permanecer constante a través de la malla.
