Caolinita
La caolinita es un mineral de arcilla, parte del grupo de minerales industriales, con la composición química Al2Si2O54. Es un mineral de silicato estratificado, con una lámina tetraédrica unida mediante átomos de oxígeno a una hoja octaédrica de octaedros de alúmina. Las rocas que son ricas en caolinita se conocen como caolín o arcilla china. El nombre se deriva del chino Kao-Ling, un pueblo cerca de Jingdezhen, provincia de Jiangxi, China. El nombre entró en inglés en 1727 de la versión francesa de la palabra: kaolin, siguiendo los informes de Francois Xavier d'Entrecolles de Jingdezhen. En África, el caolín se conoce a veces como kalaba, calaba, y calabachop. La caolinita tiene una baja capacidad de contracción y una baja capacidad de intercambio catiónico. Es un mineral suave, terroso, generalmente blanco, producido por el desgaste químico de minerales de silicato de aluminio como el feldespato. En muchas partes del mundo, es de color rosa-naranja-rojo por el óxido de hierro, lo que le da un matiz de óxido distinto. Las concentraciones más claras producen colores blanco, amarillo o naranja claro. A veces se encuentran capas alternas, como en Providence Canyon State Park en Georgia, Estados Unidos.
