Un killifish es cualquiera de varios peces oviparos cyprinodontiformes. En total, hay unas 1270 especies diferentes de killifish, la familia más grande es Rivulidae, que contiene más de 320 especies. Aunque el killifish se usa a veces como equivalente inglés a Cyprinodontidae, algunas especies que pertenecen a esa familia tienen sus propios nombres comunes, tales como el pupfish y el mummichog. El nombre killifish se deriva de la palabra holandesa "kilde", que significa arroyo pequeño, charco. Debido a que viven en aguas efímeras, los huevos de la mayoría de los killifish pueden sobrevivir a períodos de deshidratación parcial. Muchas de las especies dependen de tal diapausa, ya que los huevos no sobrevivirían más de unas pocas semanas si estuvieran totalmente sumergidos en el agua. Como las semillas, los huevos pueden ser enviados por correo sin agua. Los adultos de algunas especies, como Kryptolebias marmoratus, también pueden sobrevivir fuera del agua durante varias semanas. La mayoría de killies son pequeños peces, de uno a dos pulgadas, con la especie más grande que crece a poco menos de seis pulgadas.
