Lentigo
Un lentigo es un pequeño punto pigmentado en la piel con un borde claramente definido, rodeado por la piel de apariencia normal. Es una hiperplasia inofensiva de melanocitos que es lineal en su propagación. Esto significa que la hiperplasia de los melanocitos está restringida a la capa celular directamente por encima de la membrana basal de la epidermis donde habitualmente residen los melanocitos. Esto contrasta con los "nidos" de melanocitos multicapa encontrados en moles. Debido a esta característica, el adjetivo "lentiginoso" se utiliza para describir otras lesiones cutáneas que proliferan de forma similar linealmente dentro de la capa de células basales. Las lentiginas se distinguen de las pecas basadas en la proliferación de melanocitos. Las pecas tienen un número relativamente normal de melanocitos pero una cantidad aumentada de melanina. Un lentigo tiene un mayor número de melanocitos. Las pecas aumentarán en número y oscuridad con la exposición solar, mientras que los lentigos se mantendrán estables en su color independientemente de la exposición a la luz solar.
