Leontiasis Ossea, también conocida como leontiasis o cara de león, es una condición médica rara, caracterizada por un crecimiento excesivo de los huesos faciales y craneales. No es una enfermedad en sí misma, sino un síntoma de otras enfermedades, incluyendo la enfermedad de Paget, displasia fibrosa, hiperparatiroidismo y osteodistrofia renal. La forma común es aquella en la cual uno u otro maxilar es afectado, su tamaño aumenta progresivamente y, por lo tanto, invade las cavidades de la órbita, la boca, la nariz y sus senos accesorios. El exoftalmos se desarrolla gradualmente, pasando luego a una pérdida completa de la vista debido a la compresión del nervio óptico por el sobrecrecimiento del hueso. También puede haber interferencia con la respiración nasal y con la toma de alimentos. En la forma menos común de esta rara enfermedad el crecimiento excesivo del hueso afecta a todos los huesos craneales así como a los de la cara, los sentidos se pierden uno por uno y la muerte finalmente resulta de la presión cerebral. No hay otro tratamiento que no sea la exposición del hueso cubierto de vegetación, y la eliminación de pedazos, o la extirpación total cuando sea posible.

Leontiasis Ossea, also known as leontiasis or lion face, is a rare medical condition, characterized by an overgrowth of the facial and cranial bones. It is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of other diseases, including Paget's disease, fibrous dysplasia, hyperparathyroidism and renal osteodystrophy. The common form is that in which one or other maxilla is affected, its size progressively increasing, and thus encroaching on the cavities of the orbit, the mouth, the nose and its accessory sinuses. Exophthalmos gradually develops, going on later to a complete loss of sight due to compression of the optic nerve by the overgrowth of bone. There may also be interference with the nasal respiration and with the taking of food. In the somewhat less common form of this rare disease the overgrowth of bone affects all the cranial bones as well as those of the face, the senses being lost one by one and death finally resulting from cerebral pressure. There is no treatment other than exposing the overgrown bone, and chipping away pieces, or excising entirely where possible.
