Los leucotrienos son una familia de mediadores inflamatorios eicosanoides producidos en leucocitos por la oxidación del ácido araquidónico por la enzima araquidonato 5-lipoxigenasa. Como su nombre lo indica, los leucotrienos se descubrieron por primera vez en los leucocitos, pero desde entonces se han encontrado en otras células inmunes. Los leucotrienos usan la señalización de lípidos para transmitir información a la célula que los produce oa las células vecinas con el fin de regular las respuestas inmunes. La producción de leucotrienos suele ir acompañada de la producción de histamina y prostaglandinas, que también actúan como mediadores inflamatorios. Uno de sus roles es desencadenar contracciones en los músculos lisos que recubren los bronquiolos; Su sobreproducción es una de las principales causas de inflamación en el asma y la rinitis alérgica. Los antagonistas de leucotrienos se usan para tratar estos trastornos inhibiendo la producción o actividad de leucotrienos.
