En los vertebrados, la mandíbula, mandíbula inferior o mandíbula es un hueso que forma el cráneo con el cráneo. En los peces de aletas lóbulos y los primeros tetrápodos fósiles, el hueso homólogo a la mandíbula de los mamíferos es simplemente el más grande de varios huesos en la mandíbula inferior. En estos animales, se denomina hueso dentario y forma el cuerpo de la superficie externa de la mandíbula. Está rodeado por varios huesos espleniales, mientras que el ángulo de la mandíbula está formado por un hueso angular inferior y un hueso suprangular justo por encima de él. La superficie interna de la mandíbula está revestida por un hueso prearticular, mientras que el hueso articular forma la articulación con el cráneo propiamente dicho. Finalmente un conjunto de tres estrechos huesos coronoides se encuentran por encima del hueso prearticular. Como su nombre indica, la mayoría de los dientes están unidos al dentario, pero comúnmente también hay dientes en los huesos coronoides, ya veces también en los prearticulares. Sin embargo, este patrón primitivo complejo se ha simplificado en diversos grados en la gran mayoría de los vertebrados, ya que los huesos se han fusionado o desaparecido por completo.
