Maraca
Maracas (pronunciación (ayuda · info)), a veces llamados rumba shakers y varios otros nombres, son instrumentos musicales de percusión que se originaron en América Latina. Se clasifican como idiophones. Los jugadores los tienen por sus asas, generalmente en parejas, y los sacuden. Tradicionales maracas consisten en bolas huecas hechas de calabaza seca (cuia "koo-ya") o cáscara de coco rellena de semillas o frijoles secos y montado en un mango de madera. Las bolas de maraca modernas también están hechas de cuero, madera o plástico. A menudo, una bola es alta y la otra baja. Hay evidencia arqueológica de maracas de arcilla en Colombia desde hace 1500 años. Se cree que la palabra maraca proviene de la lengua tupí de Brasil, donde se pronuncia 'ma-ra-KAH'. Se conocen en Trinidad, Dominica y las Antillas francesas como shac-shacs. Las maracas de cuero fueron introducidas en 1955 por un percusionista venezolano. Maracas son un instrumento simple, pero requieren habilidad modesta para jugar en el tiempo a la música. Cuando el jugador cambia la dirección del movimiento para producir el sonido, las semillas o frijoles secos deben recorrer una cierta distancia antes de que golpeen la superficie externa dura.
