Meristema
Un meristema es el tejido en la mayoría de las plantas que contienen células indiferenciadas, que se encuentran en zonas de la planta donde el crecimiento puede tener lugar. Las células meristemáticas dan lugar a varios órganos de la planta y mantener la planta en crecimiento. El meristema apical del brote da origen a órganos como las hojas y las flores, mientras que el meristema apical de la raíz proporciona las células meristemáticas para el futuro crecimiento de las raíces. Las células SAM y RAM se dividen rápidamente y se consideran indeterminadas, ya que no poseen ningún estado final definido. En ese sentido, las células meristemáticas se comparan frecuentemente con las células madre de los animales, que tienen un comportamiento y función análogos. El término meristem fue utilizado por primera vez en 1858 por Karl Wilhelm von Nägeli en su libro Beiträge zur Wissenschaftlichen Botanik. Se deriva de la palabra griega merizein, que significa dividir, en reconocimiento de su función inherente. En general, las células vegetales diferenciadas no pueden dividir o producir células de un tipo diferente.
