METHYSERGIDE Methysergide is a synthetic ergot alkaloid used in the
prophylactic treatment of migraine. The pharmacological profile of methysergide
is somewhat similar to that of ergotamine but with a number of important
differences.
Methysergide is taken to prevent migraine headaches caused by changes in the
size of blood vessels. It has no place in the treatment of an acute attack.
Methysergide is reserved for patients who are unable to tolerate propranolol or

Methysergide (Sansert) is a serotonin antagonist used to treat migraine
headaches. The association of methysergide administration with the
development of retroperitoneal fibrosis and fibrosing mediastini- tis is well
established (10).
