Multiplexing
En las redes de telecomunicaciones y de ordenadores, la multiplexación es un método mediante el cual múltiples señales de mensaje analógico o flujos de datos digitales se combinan en una señal sobre un medio compartido. El objetivo es compartir un recurso costoso. Por ejemplo, en telecomunicaciones, se pueden llevar varias llamadas telefónicas utilizando un cable. La multiplexación se originó en la telegrafía en la década de 1870, y ahora se aplica ampliamente en las comunicaciones. En telefonía, se le atribuye a George Owen Squier el desarrollo de la multiplexión de la compañía telefónica en 1910. La señal multiplexada se transmite a través de un canal de comunicación, que puede ser un medio físico de transmisión. La multiplexación divide la capacidad del canal de comunicación de alto nivel en varios canales lógicos de bajo nivel, uno para cada señal de mensaje o flujo de datos a transferir. Un proceso inverso, conocido como demultiplexing, puede extraer los canales originales en el lado del receptor. Un dispositivo que realiza la multiplexación se denomina multiplexor y un dispositivo que realiza el proceso inverso se denomina demultiplexor.
