En la informática, la multitarea es un método en el que se ejecutan múltiples tareas durante el mismo período de tiempo; se ejecutan simultáneamente en lugar de secuencialmente. Las tareas comparten recursos de procesamiento comunes, como una CPU y memoria principal. Multitarea no significa necesariamente que varias tareas se están ejecutando exactamente en el mismo instante. En otras palabras, multitarea no implica paralelismo, pero sí significa que más de una tarea puede ser parcial a través de la ejecución al mismo tiempo, y más de una tarea está avanzando en un período de tiempo dado. En el caso de un ordenador con una sola CPU, se dice que sólo se ejecuta una tarea en cualquier momento, lo que significa que la CPU está ejecutando activamente instrucciones para esa tarea. La multitarea resuelve el problema mediante la programación de la tarea que puede ser la que se ejecuta en un momento dado, y cuando otra espera espera un turno. El acto de reasignar una CPU de una tarea a otra se llama un cambio de contexto. Cuando los cambios de contexto ocurren frecuentemente, se logra la ilusión del paralelismo.

In computing, multitasking is a method where multiple tasks are performed during the same period of time – they are executed concurrently instead of sequentially. The tasks share common processing resources, such as a CPU and main memory. Multitasking does not necessarily mean that multiple tasks are executing at exactly the same instant. In other words, multitasking does not imply parallelism, but it does mean that more than one task can be part-way through execution at the same time, and more than one task is advancing over a given period of time. In the case of a computer with a single CPU, only one task is said to be running at any point in time, meaning that the CPU is actively executing instructions for that task. Multitasking solves the problem by scheduling which task may be the one running at any given time, and when another waiting task gets a turn. The act of reassigning a CPU from one task to another one is called a context switch. When context switches occur frequently enough, the illusion of parallelism is achieved.
