Nummulite
Un numulite es un gran fósil lenticular, caracterizado por sus numerosas bobinas, subdivididas por septos en cámaras. Son las conchas del fósil y el protozoario marino actual Nummulites, un tipo de foraminiferan. Nummulites comúnmente varían en diámetro de 1,3 cm a 5 cm y son comunes en el Eoceno a las rocas marinas del Mioceno, particularmente alrededor de Asia del sudoeste y el Mediterráneo. Los fósiles de hasta 6 pulgadas de ancho se encuentran en las rocas del Eoceno Medio de Turquía.2 Son valiosos como fósiles índice. Los antiguos egipcios utilizaron las conchas nummulitas como monedas y las pirámides fueron construidas usando piedra caliza que contenía nummulites. No es de extrañar entonces que el nombre "Nummulites" es una forma diminuta del latín nummulus que significa "moneda pequeña", una referencia a su forma.
