Osteogénesis imperfecta
La osteogénesis imperfecta es un trastorno óseo congénito caracterizado por huesos quebradizos y propensos a fracturas. Las personas con OI nacen con tejido conectivo defectuoso, o sin la capacidad de hacerlo, generalmente debido a una deficiencia de colágeno tipo I. Se pueden distinguir ocho tipos de IO. La mayoría de los casos son causados por mutaciones en los genes COL1A1 y COL1A2. El diagnóstico de IO se basa en las características clínicas y puede confirmarse mediante pruebas de colágeno o de ADN. No hay cura para OI. El tratamiento está dirigido a aumentar la resistencia general del hueso para prevenir la fractura y mantener la movilidad. Se estima que la incidencia de IO es de uno por cada 20.000 nacidos vivos.
