El ovipositor es un órgano utilizado por algunos animales para la oviposición, es decir, la puesta de huevos. Consiste en un máximo de tres pares de apéndices formados para transmitir el huevo, preparar un lugar para él y colocarlo adecuadamente. En algunos de los insectos el órgano se utiliza simplemente para fijar el huevo a una cierta superficie, pero en muchas especies parásitas es también un órgano perforante. Es utilizado por los saltamontes para forzar una madriguera en la tierra para recibir los huevos y por las cigarras para perforar la madera de ramitas para un propósito similar. Tanto los saltamontes de cuernos largos como los mosquitos cortan los tejidos de las plantas por medio del ovipositor. Ninguno de estos ejemplos es tan notable como el género de la avispa Megarhyssa, cuyas hembras tienen un ovipositor delgado de varias pulgadas de largo que se usa para perforar la madera de los troncos de los árboles. Estas especies son parasitarias en la fase larvaria de las larvas de las avispas de cola, por lo que el huevo debe depositarse directamente en el cuerpo del huésped mientras se alimenta. La picadura de Hymenoptera es también un ovipositor, en este caso altamente modificado y asociado con las glándulas de veneno que se utilizan para paralizar las presas.
